La Paz consists of three members; DJ Sloe-Poke, MC Dez and Kool Aid. The emphasis always lies in dropping mentally uplifting messages, but at the same time the comedy shouldn't be ignored. So the outcome is the jazz heavy "EARWIGS E.P." which will have you talkin' revolution, but with a smile. Now, for the linguistically challenged, La Paz means "The Peace" so you know we ain't using reality as an excuse to act hard. DJ Sloe-Poke: A native of the Pico Heights and the very definition of a "K-Day Kid," Sloe is an aficionado of many types of music and an avid vinyl collector. The man gots more crates in his home than furniture, and that's real!!! Sloe's take on hip-hop music is this: "I don't discriminate I just dig in the crate." The son of immigrant parents, Sloe knows hard times but he never lets financial obstacles hold him back. He has managed to gain notoriety as a well-respected DJ in the hip-hop scene. Dez: Youngest member of the crew, Dez is best described as a lifer in the cypha. From the Central Valley, Dez is quik to admit that he is a fan of gansta rap, as long as its good. Dez's reason for rhyme: "I primarily got into rhyming because Kool Aid did it, him being my uncle and all. I looked up to him, but it's now more for the sake of expression." Dez is not one of those MC's you can easily place in a category, his original style is a guaranteed presence for many years to come. Kool-Aid: A life long hip-hop head, Kool-Aid feels that rapping is a gift given to MC's that they might make the world more aware. "As a child I grew up in La Causa, 'The Cause.' So revolutionary thought is in the foundation of my style, but I like to clown. You know, life's too short to always be serious." Kool-Aid is the son of Dolores Huerta and nephew of Cesar E. Chavez, the founders of the legendary United Farm Workers Union. He gives all credit to his mom's for raising him unafraid of the system in all it's forms. La Paz has made appearances performing at such venues as Fea Do Do, Luna Park, the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, the Sol Festival, various college campuses all over California, and took first place in the 1998 L.A. Watts Summer Games, Music Competition. La Paz's first single, "Original Definition," is available now on vinyl at: Martins Records, Arrons Records, Fat Beats and Beat Non-Stop. The group is already finished recording their first album, which should be coming at you soon. La Paz sends shouts out to Humble Graphics, Martins Records, E.O.W., The Havenotts, Cavecrates, OMD, Dr, OOP, A-Ski, DJ Pride and any MoFo that plays the jams. |
